There are approximately 1.3 million soldiers on active duty in the United States Army. This number has fluctuated over the years, but has remained relatively consistent since the early 2000s. The vast majority of these soldiers are stationed in the United States, with smaller numbers deployed overseas. The Army is the largest and oldest branch of the United States military, and has been an integral part of the country’s defense since its founding in 1775.

As of 2022, there were 13 million active-duty military personnel, 39% fewer than the 1987 peak. Most of the decrease came from cuts to the Army and Marine Corps. In 1987, there were 792,000 Army personnel and 197,000 Marines. By 2022, those numbers had fallen to 471,000 and 172,000, respectively. The Air Force and Navy both shrunk as well, but not as dramatically. There were 171,736 permanently assigned active-duty troops abroad in 2022.

The Chinese army is the largest in the world, with over two million active soldiers. India, the United States, North Korea, and Russia have the next largest armies, with between one and two million soldiers each. All five countries have large populations, which contributes to their high ranking on this list.
