What weapon does the American Army use?

The M4/M4A1 556mm Carbine is the standard issue firearm for most units in the US military. It is a lightweight, gas operated, air cooled, magazine fed, selective rate, shoulder fired weapon with a collapsible stock.

In the spring of 2022, the Army will replace the M4 carbine, M16 rifle, and M249 light machine gun with the Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW), consisting of the XM5 rifle and XM250 light machine gun. The NGSW will provide Soldiers with greater accuracy, range, and lethality, and will enable them to engage targets more effectively on the battlefield. The XM5 rifle will be chambered for a new 6.8mm round, and the XM250 light machine gun will be chambered for the existing 5.56mm round. The NGSW will also feature a new integrated sights and suppressor, and a new recoil-reducing stock.
