south koreans are no strangers to serving in the us military. in fact, south koreans have been serving in the us armed forces since the korean war. since then, south koreans have continued to enlist in the us military in large numbers. as of 2017, there were over 4,000 south koreans serving in the us military. while the number of south koreans enlisting in the us military has decreased in recent years, south koreans still make up a significant portion of the us military’s foreign-born population.<\/p>\n

KATUSA is an acronym for Korean Augmentation To the United States Army. The program was established in 1950 as a way to supplement the U.S. Army’s Eighth Army in Korea with Korean soldiers who were familiar with the language and culture. <\/p>\n

KATUSA soldiers are drafted from a pool of qualified volunteers who are subjected to mandatory military service for Korean male citizens. They typically serve a two-year tour of duty, and receive the same pay and benefits as their American counterparts. <\/p>\n
