Since the Nigerien Revolution in 2010, the United States has partnered with the Nigerien Armed Forces in counterterrorism efforts against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province in the Lake Chad Basin. In these efforts, the U.S. has provided training, equipment, and intelligence support to the Nigeriens. On an annual basis, there are approximately 300 U.S. troops in Niger, most of whom are based at the Air Base in Niamey. These troops are primarily engaged in counterterrorism training and capacity building with the Nigerien Armed Forces.

In 2019, the U.S. government approved the deployment of additional troops to Niger. The purpose of this deployment is to provide intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) support to the Nigerien Armed Forces and French forces operating in the region. The ISR support will be conducted using MQ-9 Reaper drones, which will be based at the Air Base in Niamey. The deployment of additional troops and drones to Niger is indicative of the ongoing commitment of the United States to partnering with the Nigeriens in counterterrorism efforts in the region.

There are no U.S. Army troops in Nigeria as of 2019.
