Khabib Nurmagomedov was born and raised in Dagestan in the former Soviet Union. His father was a competitive wrestler and encouraged his children to wrestle as well. He continued to compete and win tournaments while serving in the Army and was eventually offered a professional contract by the UFC. Khabib Nurmagomedov announced his retirement from MMA following his submission victory over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254.
