Are there women in the Chinese army? This is a question that has become a hot topic in some circles in recent years. To understand this issue better we will look into the background and data, as well as perspectives from experts and our own analysis.

History

Women have been part of the Chinese military for centuries. During the late Spring and Autumn period and early Warring States period, women warriors like Sun Shangxiang, Hua Mulan and Qiqi fought for their kingdoms. In the Song Dynasties, a group called “fenghuangse” (literally meaning a unit of women troops) was officially organised as a platoon of 200 to 500 troops. In the Ming dynasty, martial arts was thought to be obtainment of obedience and strength to home, so the army started to accept some female troops again. By the mid-Qing dynasty, the practice had basically disappeared.

However, when the Kuomintang unified China in the 1940s, women were actively incorporated into their military. It is estimated that there were up to 400,000 women in the Kuomintang army, and some of them even attained the rank of general. After the communist revolution in 1949, women were also drafted into the newly formed People’s Liberation Army.

Current Situation

Overall, there are currently more than 200,000 women in the Chinese army. They serve in the air force, navy, ground forces, and other branches of the military. According to official army figures, more than 40% of the army’s medical staff are women, while more than 10% of naval officers and technical staff are female.
