The Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction is a G8 initiative that was first proposed at the Kananaskis Summit in 2002. Canada has been a leading contributor to the Partnership, which is aimed at preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems.
Since its inception, the Partnership has provided over US$20 billion in support of cooperative projects to secure and destroy weapons and materials of mass destruction, and to help prevent the spread of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons and expertise. Canadian contributions have included funding for destruction of surplus weapons and materials, as well as for enhancing security at nuclear facilities and ports.
The Partnership has also played a key role in supporting international efforts to secure and dispose of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile. Canada has been a leader in these efforts, contributing $8.9 million to the Partnership’s Syria Chemical Weapons Destruction and Removal Fund.
